Scouts is a dynamic programme for boys and girls aged 11 to 17, offering adventure, personal growth and practical life skills in a fun and supportive environment.
Through exciting activities such as hiking, camping, cooking, first aid, mapping, community service and outdoor challenges, Scouts learn to become more independent, responsible and confident. At its heart, Scouting is about learning by doing.
Scouts progress through a structured pathway, starting with Membership and working their way through Traveller, Discoverer, First Class and ultimately Springbok, the highest Scout award in South Africa.
Learn the basics of Scouting, including the Scout Promise and Law, essential outdoor skills, and the background of the movement.
Develop abilities in knotting, first aid, safety, camping, mapping, cooking, and actively take part in community service.
The highest award representing significant achievement. Dedicate yourself to leadership, service, advanced outdoor skills, and personal development.
Badges allow Scouts to explore different interests, strengthen practical skills and discover areas they may want to pursue further in life. The badge programme includes more than 100 options!
For Scouts who are ready to go further, the programme includes Challenge Awards. These provide additional opportunities beyond the main advancement pathway to stretch Scouts, encourage deeper involvement, and recognise commitment. Examples include leadership development, environmental awareness, water or air activities, and the President's Award for Youth Empowerment.
Through the Scout programme, young people gain far more than badges and awards.
| Life Skills & Personal Growth | How It's Developed |
|---|---|
| Teamwork & Leadership | By taking part in Patrol and Troop activities, planning ahead, and solving problems together. |
| Self-Reliance | Through outdoor adventures, camping, and learning practical hands-on survival skills. |
| Community Impact | By engaging in community service to understand the value of making a positive difference. |
| Belonging & Confidence | By building friendships, learning to communicate effectively, and taking pride in shared achievements. |
More than anything, Scouting helps young people grow into capable, caring and confident individuals. It teaches teamwork, responsibility, and service to others—preparing Scouts not only for success in the programme, but for life beyond it.
